Ukraine: Several dead after clashes in Donetsk (photo, video)
Ukraine’s territorial integrity supporters clashed with pro-Russian demonstrators. People were hit with metal rods.
Two actions clashed in the centre of Donetsk yesterday evening. There were about a thousand people on each side, UNIAN notes.
Two people were killed and 14 were injured, official sources report. Mass media say that three people were killed and dozens were injured. All of them supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
A 22-year-old inhabitant of Donetsk died in an ambulance car. He was stabbed for supporting Ukraine at the meeting.
The wounded people had eye and head traumas caused by metal rods, mass media report.
The fight was started by the pro-Russia crowd, a witness said. When people supporting Ukraine’s integrity started leaving, aggressive pro-Russia activists would not let them do it. They attacked the demonstrators with tear gas and started throwing stones at them. The clash started after pro-Ukraine demonstrators had sung the national anthem of Ukraine.
Pro-Russian activists started throwing eggs, petards and smoke boxes at them right after that. The police helped peaceful protesters leave Lenin Square at the cost of slashed tyres and a smashed bus.
