European Union imposes sanctions on Belarusian companies
It has happened at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxemburg.
The EU’s new decision has frozen the assets of three companies connected with Alyaksandr Lukashenka, reports Radio Liberty.
The decision should step up the financial pressure on the Belarusian authorities and make them stop repressions directed against the opposition. European officials have also decided to add a few businessmen on “the black list” of 188 Belarusian personae non gratae.
The EU sanctions will affect the Belarusian business sector for the first time. They affect Lukashenka’s economic adviser Uladzimir Peftsiyeu and his three companies – “Beltechexport” (arms traffic), “Beltelecom” and the marketing company “Sportpari”.
