€6-40 thousand to kill a wisent

You can legally kill a wisent in Belarus and export its head as a trophy. You do poachers exist then?

“There are five wisent. The biggest male costs 40 thousand euro. There are males for 30 and 25 thousands and a female that costs 15 thousands. They have been moved from the main fund to the reserve”, - explains “Białowieża Forest”.

They add that they will also help to prepare the documents. And the wisent… you will be able to choose it out of five animals. The most expensive one costs 40 thousand euro – a gold medal.

“This is the maximum trophy of the international trophy scoring system. The trophy can get a certain number of points which defines the medal type: silver, gold or bronze”, - explain employees of the national park “Białowieża Forest”.

The wisent moved to the reserve gene pool can be killed. However, there is “a gold medal”!

“They are rather old – at least 20 years old. But hunters are not interested in meat, they want a trophy – the head… Two heads have been recently exported to France”.

Wisent are cheaper in the game-preserve “White Path”. The price list can be found on its website: a gold medal male costs 14 thousand euro, a silver medal one – 11800 and a female costs only 6.3 thousand euro.

When Euroradio managed to phone “White Path”, the female for 6300 … had already disappeared.

Employee of “White Path”: “There is one wisent left, a female. Oh, wait a moment; they will not shoot this last female”.

“Centre Resort” belonging to the President’s Administration auctioned a wisent.  The starting price was 40 thousand euro. People willing to kill the animal raised the price to 55 thousand in one day.

The Ministry of Nature does not think that wisent hunting is a problem because they are either ill or old.

Ministry of Nature: “Only old wisent are transferred to the reserve gene pool: males and females older than 17, terminally ill wisent, blind or weak animals. Only three wisent were transferred to the reserve last year”.
