Belarus asks $9bn loan from Russia to build nuclear plant

Belarus has asked Russia to issue a loan of $9 billion to construct the first nuclear power plant, Russia's finance minister Andrei Kudrin told reporters in Minsk.

He also said that Belarus' economy could have become insolvent by the end of 2009 or next year due to the shortage of currency reserves.

The next installment of $500 million for Belarus depends on Minsk's efforts to ensure an economic stability of the country, Kudrin said.
