'Brat' chosen as word of the year
Charli XCX
The word “brat” has become the word of 2024 according to the Collins dictionary (the Oxford dictionary named rizz as the main word of 2023). It was chosen thanks to singer Charli XCX, who named her album Brat, writes theguardian.com.
The compilers of the dictionary noticed that the word “brat” used to mean “someone, especially a child, who behaves badly or annoys you”. But after the release of Charli XCX's album, the meaning of the word changed. Now “brat” is someone “characterised by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.”
The word “era” also made it into the top 10 words of 2024. This was due to the “The Era's Tour” of another singer, Taylor Swift.
