The leader of the Belarusian democratic forces Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and representatives of her office celebrated another anniversary of the beginning of the Kastus Kalinouski uprising. They visited the cemetery where the participants of the events are buried. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda was also present at the event.
January 22 marks the anniversary of the beginning of the 1863-1864 uprising.
"This day always seems significant and holy. Despite the difficult fate of those who fought for independence and freedom more than 160 years ago, this date carries a lot of hope and strength. We are still here: we remember and honor the legacy of our heroes. Our struggle for an independent state and the right of Belarusians to determine their own destiny is a continuation of the great path they began.
However, this memory goes beyond national history. The uprising against tsarist oppression became a symbol of the common struggle of Belarusians, Poles and Lithuanians. This unity reminds us that even in difficult times we find strength for solidarity and common resistance.
Centuries later, we are still grateful to Kastus Kalinouski and all the rebels for their courage and self-sacrifice. And we know that our descendants will be just as grateful to all Belarusians for continuing to fight for a common future, freedom and peace," Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya wrote on her Telegram channel.
