Belarus goes up to 151st position in press freedom rating
Belarus occupies the 151st position in the press freedom rating. It is mentioned in the annual report of an international human rights organization “Reporters without Borders”, informs BelaPAN. Belarus was 151st in 2006 and 2007 but went down to the 154th place in 2008.
Such countries and Afghanistan (149), Israel (150), Fiji (152) and Russia (153) are next to Belarus this year.
Only Georgia (81) and Belarus have managed to go up by a few positions in the rating out of all post-Soviet countries. The human rights organization notes that the Belarusian government “has engaged in a cautious and limited improvement of relations with the press as part on the resumed dialogue with the EU”.
Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden share the first position in the rating. Iran (172), Turkmenistan (173), North Korea (174) and Eritrea (175) occupy the last positions.
