Belarus unlikely to abolish army deferrals for students
Belarus defense minister Leanid Maltsau presented a draft legislation on the status of servicemen during the plenary session of the House of Representatives on October 8. The Interfax Zapad news agency reported that the new legislation envisages a temporary suspension of university education for students during their term in the army. When drafted, a soldier is expected to take an academic leave, reports interfax.by.
Belarus defense ministry's spokesman Viachaslau Ramenchyk said, however, that no changes in the issue of deferrals or drafts would be expected. These questions are not dealt with in the framework of the draft legislation on the status of servicemen.
Ramenchyk maintains that deferrals and drafting issues were not discussed at the Oval Hall (Parliament) at all. He does not understand where journalists could pick these words of the minister from.
