Buzek: Belarus officials allowed to travel to EU for one year more

When announcing this decision, the president of the European Parliament noted a positive signal that the European Radio for Belarus was allowed to open an office in Minsk.
The moratorium on visa sanctions for Belarus officials will be exxtended for another year, EP President Jerzy Buzek said in an exclusive interview with the European Radio for Belarus.

Jerzy Buzek:
“The progress is very small indeed and we are very concerned that there is no clear democratization. At the same time, the number of political prisoners has dropped. We also know that the radio station that broadcasts from Warsaw (Europadio) was allowed to open an office in Minsk. Therefore, there are certain positive signals. And, the European Union would also wish to respond in a positive way to those positive signals. That's why the agreement on the visa system for Belarus officials has been extended for 12 months. If after these 12 months there will be a clear progress in democratization, we will slow down the rapprochment between EU and Belarus”.

The European Radio for Belarus was allowed to get accreditation in Belarus for one year as well.

The president of the European Parliament noted that Belarus is undoubtedly a European country and EU's nearest neighbor, and Europe is interested in Belarus. According to Buzek, the European Union will cooperate with the Belarusian opposition, because it promotes democratic values. Jerzy Byzek promised that EU will continue to put pressure on the Belarusian authorities so that they become more open for a dialogue and move towards democratic freedoms and respect human rights.
