Eternal fire at Brest Fortress costs $5000 monthly

Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom used to pay for it before, but no agreement has been signed with the Russian company this year. It costs $5000 per month to maintain the gas-powered Eternal Fire at the Brest Fortress WWII memorial. Different from the previous years, Gazprom does not pay for it now, Valery Hubarenka, the director of the history and culture museum told the European Radio for Belarus.

The Eternal Fire at the Victory Square in Minsk costs approximately Br4,740,000 to maintain. Raisa Miranovich from Central District's administration says 287 cubic meters of natural gas are burnt by the Eternal Fire memorial daily. It is sold by Mingaz at $210 for 1000 cubic meters.

It appears that Eternal Fire memorials cost a lot. But the authorities play down even a possibility of shutting down the fire at the Victory Square due to the financial crisis.

Александр Раковщик: “We have everything under control. We control every gas stove there. How can we forget about the Eternal Fire in the center of the capital?! Are you serious?" Alexander Rakoushik, an official from Minsk City Hall told the European Radio for Belarus.
