EU Council: Sanctions may be cancelled at any moment
Heads of Ministries of Foreign Affairs of 27 EU member states have decided to prolong the sanctions imposed on certain Belarusian officials until October 2010 at a meeting in Brussels this Tuesday.
"In connection with the absence of evident progress in the fields mentioned in the Council’s Decision on October 13, 2008, the Council cannot cancel the sanctions imposed on certain Belarusian officials”, - is said in the EU’s resolution about Belarus. – That is why it has decided to prolong the sanctions until October 2010… Nevertheless, the Council has decided to suspend travel limitations imposed on Belarusian officials to encourage progress in the fields mentioned by the EU … until October 2010”.
According to the statement of the EU Council, the sanctions can be cancelled at any moment in response to actions of the Belarusian government in the field of democracy and human rights.
