Nuclear scientist from Moscow detained by police in Astravets

Andrei Ozherosvsky, a nuclear scientist and coordinator of the Moscow-based group Ecooborona (Eco Defense), today was detained by police in Astravets where public hearings on the evaluation of environmental risks caused by the planned nuclear power station in Belarus were taking place. He was interrogated at the local police station. Almost 100 copies of "Critical Comments on Eveluation Report of Belarusian Nuclear Station" were impounded by the police.

At the same time, nobody was taking anonymous leaflets in support of the construction that were beung handed out to participants of the hearings.

The hearings became the first even initiated by the authorities on this topic. The previous hearings were organized by public pressure groups.
