Police to patrol Kurapaty memorial site
Mobile patrols of the traffic police and the Minsk District Police Department have been ordered to protect Kurapaty, a site of mass executions by Stalin's secret police in late 1930s in the suburbs of Minsk, Anton Astapovich, the head of the Belarusian Society for Protection of History and Culture Heritage, has learned from a letter by Tatsiana Dzedukh, the chief of ideology department at the Minsk Region Executive Committee. The list from the regional administration came in respond to Astapovich's written request to provide protection to Kurapaty.
Since Anton Astapovich "refused from guard services on the commercial basis", the letter writes, a decision has been made to protect the site by traffic police patrols in the area. The historian described this decision as positive, because it would otherwise cost Br20 million monthly to be paid to the police for the protection of the site.
