Polish President meets BUP leaders

The Polish President Lech Kaczyński met the head of the Belarusian Union of Poles (BUP) Anzhalika Borys and an activist of the association Andrzei Pachobut. The union is not recognised by the Belarusian authorities. A.Pachobut informed BelaPAN that the administration of the BUP had taken a decision to keep the essence of the negotiations with the Polish President a secret for some time.

"We are very grateful to the Polish President for his support, - said Pachobut. – The situation before the VII meeting of the Belarusian Union of Poles that has to take place in Hrodna on March 14 and 15 is really complicated. Our delegates are suffering from enormous pressure, people are afraid to lose their jobs due to participation in the meeting of the organization. We have decided not to inform the public about the details of our meeting with the Polish President to avoid “aggravation” of the situation. At the same time, we would like to announce that we will conduct a protest action in a city square if the Belarusian authorities disrupt the meeting”.

According to the activist, representatives of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Seym and Senate and European parliamentarians are going to take part in the meeting. Delegates will elect the administration of the BUP and review the results of the organization’s functioning during the last four years.
