Ales Byalyatski gets Lech Wałęsa award
The award is also called "Polish Nobel". The Belarusian political prisoner was praised for his input into the human rights defense activity.
The awarding ceremony took place in the
Artus Yard in Gdansk. Byalyatski's wife Natallia Pinchuk was invited, and she
was the one who collected the award personally from Lech Wałęsa, Radio Liberty reports.
The Lech Walesa Award is granted to institutions,
organizations or individuals who work in solidarity for greater understanding
between nations, freedom and
human rights defense. Former president of Brazil Lula Da Silva
received the award last year.
The Award
was established in 2008 to thank for the support from the international
community in 1983 when Lech Walesa received the Nobel Peace Prize. A
laureate receives a
diploma, a statue and a cheque for US$ 100.000.
