Residents complain to Prosecutor General over plans to build a chemical plant
The residents of Druzhny and Svislach in the Pukhavichy district, Minsk region on April 25 filed a collective complaint with the Prosecutor General's Office over legal violations while planning to build a pesticides-production line in the area, protest campaign activist Natallya Matsepon from Druzhny told Belapan.
She claims that at the planning stage, the convention on the access to information and the participation of the public in decision-making was violated. The public opinion was probed after designers had already started their work. The public opinion polls did not affect the preparations.
The complaint also states that the Belarusian Constitution was also violated as regards the articles that deal with the health care and safety of citizens.
The plant, owed by a Russian company, plans to produce chemicals for agriculture and to dispose of fertilizers with the expired life terms.
The residents of Dryznhy have been campaigning against the construction of the plant over the past six months. In early February, over 1000 signatures against the plant were sent to the Office of the President. On March 22, the residents staged an unauthorized demonstration against plans to build this chemical plant.
On April 14, over 5000 redidents from Druzhny, Rudzensk, Svislach and other settlements in the Pukhavichy district sent a collective complaint to the Cabinet of Ministers.
