Minsk Lenin District Court has sentenced Mikalai Statkevich to 15 days of arrest for participation in a peaceful protest action on July 3.
Judge Yuliya Kavyaka pronounced the sentence in Statkevich’s absence, the human rights website Viasna reports. The oppositionist was informed about the court’s decision by post.
Statkevich was accused of taking an active part in the unauthorized meeting in Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk on July 3. The cancellation of the military exercise West-2017 and the release of political prisoners were openly discussed there.
Nevertheless, the politician is still at large. He will not go to prison until they come for him, Statkevich told Radio Liberty. “If they do not want to imprison me, they will say that the prison is full at the moment. It has already happened before,” he explained.
Minsk Savetski District Court has also fined Statkevich for 1050 roubles (50 base amounts) for taking part in the meeting at the Military Cemetery on May 8.
