Canada against accepting Belarus in UN Council on human rights
"Canada does not approve of election of Belarus in the UN Council on human rights and will appeal to the other UN members to vote for Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina”, - is said in the letter of Canadian government sent to the leader of Belarusian democratic forces Alyaksandr Milinkevich.
"Canadian authorities are worried by the fact that a country violating human rights may be accepted in the UN Council on human rights.
Several months ago the General Assembly denounced Belarus for “steady worsening of the situation concerning human rights” and for the refusal of Belarusian authorities to cooperate with the UN Council on human rights in all issues”, - is stressed in the letter.
Canadian authorities note that “electing Belarus or other countries violating human rights (which is denounced by the General Assembly) will discredit the UN Council on human rights”.
