Communists to become LEFT party but will lose some membership
The 14th congress of the Belarusian Party of Communists (PKB), scheduled for October, is mainly expected to focus on the proposed change of the party's name.
According to the preliminary polls, three new names have been shortlisted: Belarusian Party of the Left, Part of Democracy and Justice and Motherland Party. But According to PKB spokesman Sergei Vazniak, the majority of the party members favor a name which uses the "left" word.
“My impression is that it will be the Left Party. The congress can also call it United Left Part or the Party of the Left", Vazniak told the European Radio for Belarus.
The change of the name is likely to lead to membership quantity changes as some PKB members do not wish to refuse from the "communist" word and will leave the party.
