Heavy earthquake and tsunami in Chile: five people killed
A heavy 8.4-magnitude earthquake hit Chile last night. The epicentre was 228 km to the north of the capital (Santiago). It was 10 km below the surface. A few aftershocks followed. Five people were killed. Three of them died of heart attacks caused by stress and two others were killed by falling roofs and stones, RIA Novosti reports.
The Chilean authorities have evacuated 1 million people from the region. More than 185 thousand people were left without power in Kakimbo.
The earthquake caused a tsunami along the coastline. The waves were 3-5 meters high. There is a tsunami threat in Peru, near Hawaii, in some parts of California and even in New Zealand, BBC reports.
