Hungarian embassy has difficulty finding space for exhibition about country's path to democracy

The National Library of Belarus has rejected a request from the Hungarian embassy to rent out space for an exhibition of photographs entitled "Will and Democracy."

The display marks anniversaries of the 1956 revolution and the declaration of the Hungarian Republic in 1989.

Lyudmila Kirukhina, deputy director of the National Library, told BelaPAN that the library's space is occupied by another exhibition that closes on November 25.

On the other hand, a library official told Hungarian Ambassador Ferenc Kontra that space was unavailable because the building needs repairs after heavy rains.

Despite a preliminary consent, the National Library administration initially denied the embassy a hall for holding a ceremony marking Hungary's national holiday. Kontra said the request was granted only after he appealed to the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance. The ceremony will be held on October 21.
