Journalist Pavel Sheremet killed in Kiev (updated)

Famous Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet died in Kiev on the morning of July 20 at about 7.45 a.m. He was driving a car when it exploded at the intersection of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Franko Streets opposite a McDonald’s restaurant.

The car belonged to the Ukrainian Pravda co-wner Alena Prytula. She was not in the car at the moment of the blast. The police have arrived on the scene.

The bomb went off  when Sheremet was driving off Ivan Franko Streer 12 at 7.40 and approached the intersection. As of writing, no official versions are available.

Pavel Sheremet was born in Belarus in 1971 and started his career in journalism there. In 1997, he became famous after making a report about the situation at Belarus-Lithuania border – he showed that the border was not guarded. He was arrested and was put on probation. The journalist lived and worked in Moscow until 2011. He created the resource Belarusian Partisan publishing critical articles about Belarusian politics.

He moved to Kiev in 2012 and started cooperating with Ukrainian Pravda. He was a host at Radio Vesti.

Pavel Sheremet was married. He is survived by a son and a daughter.
