Lazavik: Armed men in Ukrainian cities produce grin impression
The Belarusian CEC secretary has shared his Ukrainian impressions with Euroradio.
Lazavik: “It seemed to me that most Ukrainians had come to vote for peace and quiet in the country rather than for some candidate or political idea. Everyone was tired of this long political confrontation.”
The Belarusian delegation spent a few days in Ukraine and visited Kiev, Borispol and Periyeslavl-Hmelnitski. Armed people near administrative buildings and roadblocks produced a grin impression, Mikalai Lazavik said. Having talked to voters, the Belarusians noticed that Ukrainians were really worried about the armed confrontation in the east of the country.
Speaking about the early presidential election in Ukraine, Lazavik noted that it is usually possible to find violations anywhere if you need it. However, even the impossibility of conducting the election on the territory of Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts could not be considered a violation, the Belarusian CEC sectary thinks.
Lazavik: “You cannot call it a violation. People could not vote because of the political situation and some candidates did not have equal access to all voters and could not agitate in some areas.”
The early presidential election was held in Ukraine on May 25. Independent candidate Petro Poroshenko won in the first ballot with 54% of votes. Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka officially congratulated him on May 28.
