Radosław Sikorski: This is a sad day for European Union
Polish Minister for Foreign Affairs negatively estimated yesterday's decision of the Council of the EU on Belarus.
One of the countries-members of the EU prevented the others from taking a stricter decision on sanctions against Belarus, head of the Polish MFA
Radosław Sikorski has said at the press-conference, reports the Polish channel TVP INFO.
Radosław Sikorski: "Despite the best efforts of numerous countries, this is a very sad day for the European Union. Economic interests of one of the countries-members turned out to be more important than the necessity to influence the Belarusian authorities to release political prisoners. Economic interest is one point, while people who are tortured in prisons - this is a totally different case. I think that there should be some borders in struggling for purely economic interests".
Let us remind you, according to the information provided by the Belagian newspaper EUobserver, the European countires failed to reach agreement because of Slovenia, which defended Belarusian businessman Yury Chyzh from getting into the "black list". According to the newspaper's sources, the Slovenian company "Riko Group" won the tender for building a 5-star hotel "Kempinski" in Minsk, together with the group of companies "Triple", subordinate to Chyzh. The budget of the project surpasses 100 million euros.
