International Students' Day marked today

Students went out to the streets of occupied Czechoslovakia on October 28, 1939 to commemorate the anniversary of the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic. A student the Medical Faculty of Charles University Jan Opletal was shot. His funeral turned into a protest action. More than 1200 students were arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Nine students and activists were executed.

The International Students’ Council took place in London two years later. It was decided to announce this day the Students’ Day.
