Court rules to deny compensation for HR defender
Minsk's Maskouski District Court rejects moral damages claim from Harry Pahanyaila against three Belarus ministries.
The representative of the
Belarusian Helsinki Committee sued three ministries at a time - the Ministry of
Finance, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Pahanyaila demanded that they recompense the moral damages that he suffered due
to prohibition to leave the territory of Belarus.
Pahanyaila learned about his travel ban in March 2012. The reason for him being on the travel-ban list was some alleged financial
violations. The human rights defender managed to prove this was wrong only in
Summer - the Maskouski district court of Minsk returned him the right to travel
abroad. They claimed there was some "technical failure" which led to
this mistake.
Pahanyaila disagreed with the wording. He wanted to punish the guilty and to
get a Br 3 million compensation.
