Politeness in ChatGPT requests contributes to global warming.
Phrases like "please," "could you," and "thank you" used to address artificial intelligence have a tangible impact on the climate. Human rights activist Aliaksey Kazlyuk of Human Constanta points out.
"Each of your requests is processed by ChatGPT as a set of tokens. Additional phrases that do not contain instructions are also taken into account during processing. On average, a request consists of about 50 tokens. Polite requests can add 3-7 additional tokens.
At the scale of millions of requests, this can add up to a 10% load on server resources. Consequently, the climate impact will also increase," he writes.
Of course, you want to be polite, even with AI. But large linguistic models have no feelings or emotions and do not recognize human signs of etiquette.
