Rymasheuski: Priest Lazar's case resembles abduction
The steering committee of Belarusian Christian Democracy appeals to Prosecutor General over the fate of detained Catholic priest Uladzislau Lazar.
They drew attention to the fact that the fate of Catholic priest Uladzislau Lazar has been unknown for over 2 months. One of the leaders of the steering committee, Vital Rymasheuski, told Euroradio:
"We have demanded that the General Prosecutor’ office fulfill its responsibilities: they should supervise the case and find out whether the priest is jailed legally or not. Can his measure of restriction be changed; can they release him on recognizance? They need to answer why the priest was detained and what he is accused of. However, it resembles abduction at the moment.”
A Catholic spy was detained in Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka claimed on July 26. Information about the detention of Uladzislau Lazar appeared the next day. Mr. Lazar is a Belarusian citizen; he graduated from Hrodna seminary and continued his studies in Poland.
No other information has been available so far. He was thought to be jailed in KGB prison, but Vital Rymasheuski noticed that the postcards sent to the priest had returned. “He may not be there,” Rymasheuski said. Over one thousand signatures have already been collected in support of the Catholic priest, he noted.
