Volha Karatch: We don't take part in a 'technical election'
The Our House civil campaign leader explains to Euroradio why she has chosen to stay away from the presidential election campaign in 2015.
Volha Karatch on April 1, 2015 declared she will not run for presidency later this year. She reckons the election will be just a 'technical moment' that people in Belarus will not take seriously. But Volha Karatch also points to possible participation of a pro-Russian candidate to challenge the incumbent president Aliaksandr Lukashenka. Here is what she had to tell Euroradio.
Karatch: “We have a feeling that this election is perceived as a "technical function." But the most interesting game can begin towards the very end of the election campaign or right after the Election Day. Russia is clearly changing its tactics towards Belarus.”
Volha Karatch reckons alternative candidates will be defeated if they choose to play by classical election campaign rules. Yet, she notes she can back a candidate who will address all burning challenges and threats, including the influence of Russian media on Belarusians with regard to their sympathies towards Russia.
