50 people selected for Kalinouski program this year
All of them will start studying at Polish universities this October.
According to Ina Kuley, chairperson of the Salidarnast committee for protection of the repressed, program participants are the repressed young people or children of the repressed. Repression is a criminal and administrative penalty for political reasons, fines, searches, beatings, layoffs, noted Ms Kuley in her comments to BelaPAN. Recommendations of public figures and politicians confirming the activity of those who join the program, or their parents, are also taken into account.
As reported by Kuley, this year 12 people were expelled from Belarusian universities for political reasons. This was linked with "participation of students in one form or another in the local elections, as well as students' public statements about the existence of political prisoners in Belarus."
More than 600 people took part in the program over the seven year period. The Kalinouski program was established after the 2006 elections.
