Sentence pronounced in Siarhei Chaly's beating case
Minsk's Central District Court has pronounced a sentence to the two men who beat independent economic commentator Siarhei Chaly and his friend Anatol Sakalouski. Trowel worker Alyaksandr Rublyou, 29 has been sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment. Electrician Kiryl Dounar, 33 has received 3 years in a penal labour camp.
The incident occurred on the night of May 19. Chaly and Sakalouski were beaten in the yard at Lenin Street, 6 in Minsk. Chaly and his friends were beaten after insulting his wife, Rublyou sclaimed. Siarhei Chaly was taken to hospital. The suspects pled partially guilty.
Chaly wanted to get BYN5000 a compensation of moral damage. However, he will only get 1000, the judge ruled. The amount of Sakalouski’s compensation has been reduced from BYN500 to BYN250.
