Belarus' intellectual elite executed 80 years ago

The 80th anniversary of the Black Night (mass execution of the Belarusian intellectual elite) is marked on October 29. The NKVD killed them on the night of October 30, 1937. Todar Lyashtorny, Mihas Zaretski, Moisha Kulbak, Ales Dudar, Izi Haryk, Anatol Volny, Mihas Charot, Yuli Taubin and Platon Halavach were among the executed.
The Soviet authorities repressed about 600 thousand Belarusian citizens belonging to different social groups. About 200 thousand people died in prison or were shot.
An event in memory of the Black Night started in Kurapaty on Sunday at 11 p.m. Historians, poets and musicians participated in it, Nasha Niva reports.
