The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has confirmed the story about the illegal border crossing by the Belarusian border guard. The detained man expressed his desire to join the Ukrainian defenders against Russian aggression. According to him, he tried to cross the border with a like-minded person (who was not a border guard). But they were discovered in the border area on the Belarusian side and chased with shooting. As a result, the fate of the other Belarusian is unknown, he did not cross into Ukraine. The Ukrainian side is verifying the information (the man had no documents). After that, a decision will be made about the fate of the Belarusian man.
The incident occurred on June 29 and became public the day before after a court decision was passed. The Belarusian was tried in Ukraine for an administrative offense (for crossing the border illegally, outside the checkpoint), and he received two days in jail and a fine. The document says that the offender served as a petty officer in the Brest frontier group. He crossed the border in the Kovel district, Volyn region.
The State Border Committee of Belarus said Tuesday that "no Belarusian border guard had crossed the border into Ukraine." Thus, it called the report about the defector untrue.
