Car confiscation law: 77 drivers caught on first day
All of them were stopped for drunken driving for the first time and could be allowed to keep their cars.
The amendments concerning the punishment for drunken driving came into power in Belarus on October 24. Under the new regulation, if a person is stopped for drunken driving twice in the course of one year, his or her vehicle may be confiscated. If the car was borrowed, the owner would still lose it. However, the latter provision does not apply to stolen cars.
The fines for drunken driving have also increased significantly to 50-100 base-rate amounts, reaching between 6.5-13 million roubles or approximately up to over 1000 Euros, BELTA reports.
