Communists under trial for suppressing rebellion in 1956 in Hungary
Béla Biszku, the former functioner of the Communist Party that ruled the country till 1989, is charged with military crimes.
Béla Biszku is 92. He is charged with the crimes committed during suppression of the anti-Communist rebellion that started in October 1956. At that time, he co-headed the temporary executive committee of the party which struggled with the protests, writes Lenta.ru.
According to the prosecutor's office, Béla Biszku gave orders to execute the protesters in December, when the rebellion was already dispersed with the help of the Soviet troops. Over 46 people died in the city of Salgótarján, including women and children. The total number of Biszku's victims is considered to be 50 people.
In 1957-1961 Béla Biszku was the Interior Minister of Hungary. He was also a member of the political committee of the Hungarian Socialist Working Party which became the ruling Communist Party since 1956.
