The congress of democratic forces may be held on May 14 or 15, the organizing committee announced on February 18. The temporary order of nominating delegates was also approved at the meeting.

The organizing committee does not want ‘to shut the door on partners in the democratic movement’, Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu explained to BelaPAN. Democratic organizations have enough time to join the organizing committee and make their suggestions about the order of sending delegates and the date of the congress, he said.

Delegates will be chosen at meetings where 10 people will be able to suggest one candidate. Other means of choosing candidates may be used in villages where it is impossible to collect 10 signatures.

Up to 500 people may take part in the congress, Nyaklyayeu thinks.

The next meeting of the organizing committee was appointed for February 23. Messages that will be made public at the congress will be discussed there. “ They will be connected with the  social and economic situation in the country. This will be the purpose of the congress, not some mythical unification. The democratic community should suggest ways out of the current deadlock. If the government cannot do it, it will become the democratic forces’ purpose,” Nyaklyayeu claimed.
