Council of Europe expects more than death penalty moratorium from Belarus
Minsk should also demonstrate progress in the fields of electoral laws and the freedom of the media.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe rapporteur on Belarus Andres Herkel. He spoke at a conference "Civil society in Belarus - 2013" on June 14 in Warsaw, BelaPAN reports.
Herkel noted that there had been a significant progress in the relations between Minsk and the Council of Europe, it is also important for the Belarusian authorities to solve the problem of political prisoners, to achieve improvements in the fields of freedom of elections, the media and other areas.
Today, according to Herkel, the human rights situation in Belarus has not improved and is still as bad as ever.
The PACE rapporteur said that he would like to get an opportunity to meet with political prisoners, if the Belarusian authorities allow him to visit the country in preparation for its next report.
