Dr. Saikou: Coercive hypnotherapy makes no sense
150 alcoholics guarded by the police attended a séance of hypnotherapy conducted by a psychotherapist Dzmitry Saikou. Other Saikou’s colleagues refused to take part in the police action.
The séances were organized in Pastavy and in Nouka village not far from Vitsebsk. Policemen brought drunkards from four nearest districts there. Saikou has been practicing his method of helping people refuse from smoking, drinking and eating too mush for 16 years.
The majority of the patients who gathered in Pastavy House of Culture and in Nouka were able-bodied men and women who still had something to achieve in life. That is why the doctor thinks that voluntary séances of hypnotherapy are his civil duty. However, he does not want to force people to come. If somebody feels like leaving during the lection or after the video film, they are free to do so. Coercive hypnotherapy makes no sense.
The psychotherapist sometimes agrees to conduct hypnotherapy for free – sometimes relatives of patients ask for it. However, it is the first time he has been involved in a mass action like this.
Policemen are waiting for positive results of the action including a better criminogenic situation. According to the current statistics, a third of all crimes are committed by intoxicated people in Vitsebsk Region.
However, helping poeple to overcome their addiction to alcohol is not enough. They have to be able to find placement and have a place to live at – they should regain their dignity. It is necessary to start hoping for the better instead of trying to “drown sorrows”.
