EU alarmed over dispersal of peaceful demo in Minsk
Sweden, which currently holds the EU presidency, has expressed alarm over the dispersal of a peaceful demonstration on September 16 in Minsk.
Some 35 people were detained on October Square in central Minsk when they were staging an action to commemorate politician Viktar Hanchar and businessman Anatol Krasouski who disappeared without a trace exactly ten years ago.
Sweden has called on the Belarusian authorities to refrain from using force against peaceful demonstrators and to make sure that journalists can perform their professional duties. The official Minsk is urged to continue efforts in order to improve its democracy and human rights record, reports Belapan
