EU not to threaten Belarus with sanctions for death penalty
Belarus is the only European country that is still practicing the death penalty. This is a very important thing for the EU, deputy head of the EU Representative Office in Belarus Jim Kansas said. “The European Union expresses a protest every time a person is sentenced to death in Belarus. We usually touch upon capital punishment whenever we are discussing human rights.”
Nevertheless, the European Union is not planning to restore the frozen sanctions imposed on Belarusian officials and enterprises in order to make Belarus abolish the death penalty. “Those sanctions were imposed for other reasons,” Kansas said.
