Ex-policeman gets fined 230BYN for insulting Belarusian language
Ex-policeman Vasil Varushchanka stood trial in Homiel's Navabelitski District Court on January 27. He was fined 230 roubles (10 base amounts) for insulting the Belarusian language, nn.by reports.
Varushchanka’s comment appeared on VKontakte. “The Belarusian language is a rotting corpse and should be buried,” the ex-policemen wrote under a Belarusian language poll.
The man served with the Homiel police force until 2013, social networks users found out. Activist Ihar Sluchak lodged a complaint about Varushchnka’s insult of the Belarusian language and the case was sent to court.
The young man told journalists before the trial that had changed his mind. “That comment was silly. The language is not dead because people are still speaking it. I did not want to offend anyone,” nn.by quotes Varushchanka as saying
He also commented on the activist that had lodged a complaint about his comment. “I am not offended as it is their own sexual drama. I think that this is their work and they are getting paid for it.”
The court returned Varushchanka, 24, guilty and fined him. The hearing took 17 minutes.
Varuschnka is also known for making a photo of himself with his legs on the judge’s desk in a courtroom.
