Aliaksandr Mikhalkovich and Hanna Badziaka's documentary "Motherland" has won the top prize in the International Documentary section at the 15th NNW Film Festival in Gdynia.

Jury president Anna Ferens described the film as a tense drama that tells a multi-layered story about the moral erosion of people trapped in totalitarianism.

The film deals with violence in the military and in society and explores the social norms behind the phenomenon. The film tells the story of a mother whose son is found dead while serving in the army.

This year, the film has already been recognized at international festivals and has been nominated for the European Academy Award. For example, the film won the audience award at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival in Krakow.

As Reform.by notes, during the award ceremony, director Aliaksandr Mikhalkovich said: "I would like to dedicate this award to Belarusian political prisoners and Ukrainians at the front".
