Iceland wants to recall application for EU membership

Iceland wants to recall its application for the EU membership, PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson announced.

This is the government’s second attempt. The previous one resulted in public protests and appeals for a referendum.

Iceland applied for the EU membership during the financial crisis in July 2009. The European Commission accepted it in February 2010 and official negotiations started in July 2010.

However, the negotiations slowed down after the elections in April 2013. Gunnlaugsson’s Progressive Party came to power back then.
