International foundation to support Belarusian political prisoners

The United Transition Cabinet of Belarus is working on opening an international foundation to support Belarusian political prisoners exclusively, said Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya at a meeting in Warsaw on Monday.
"The political prisoners' rehabilitation is very important to us," she said. "Lithuania has rehabilitation programs for political prisoners. They are one-off events that do not happen continuously. We understand that one day all political prisoners will be out of jail. People will need to be supported. They will have to start their lives from scratch. We are working to open an international foundation to support political prisoners. We realize that most of the support currently comes from donations, and there are fewer donors. So we want it to work at the state level. Several countries would unite and help political prisoners with money".
Recently Tsikhanouskaya announced the creation of a fund to support political prisoners. It happened after the letter from a group of their relatives, who believed that not enough was done to secure the release of these people. There are currently 1,438 political prisoners in Belarus.
