Lazavik: Observers need to see how ballot papers are counted
“If observers are not allowed to see the process of counting, it is not a good system,” he said.
CEC secretary Mikalai Lazavik gave an interview to the programme Contours on ONT on July 26. He described the participation of observers in the election campaign and their rights.
“If observers are not allowed to see the process of counting, it is not a good system,” Lazavik assured.
"They have changed the law so that observers can watch the process of counting. They should not simply watch from afar, they must see the way ballot papers are being counted,” the official claimed. If an election commission does not allow observers to do it, this is a violation and it must be reported, he said.
There are usually 30 or 40 thousand local observers at presidential elections and they work actively, Lazavik noted. An OSCE group will be among international observers.
