Lithuania to shift nuclear dump away from Belarus

Lithuania is reported to build its nuclear waste dump 4 km off the Belarusian border, not 700 meters away as it was initially planned.

According to Uladzimir Sonin, the chief of the nuclear monitoring department at the Ministry for Emergencies of Belarus, if Lithuania agrees to this concession, it will have to put in more funding into the project.

The Lithuanians are confident that if the dump is shifted farther from the border, the security of the nuclear waste dump would be compromised as the soil is worse there in geological terms. However, the Belarusians insist on the 4-km option.

The medium and low-activity nuclear waste with the life span of up to 30 years will be dumped at the site. The waste would come from the Ignalina nuclear power plant which is planned to be phased out by Lithuania.
