Lithuania worried about Russia’s active participation in Belarusian NPP construction

Lithuanian is not worried about Belarus’ intention to build a nuclear power plant, but it is worried about the active participation of Russia in the project. The Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus Edminas Bagdonas has claimed it at a press conference in Minsk. The Ambassador claimed that Lithuania had not been officially informed that the plant would be built in Astravetski District. He also reminded that Lithuania had informed Belarus about the construction of Ignalina nuclear power plant first.

Furthermore, the official Vilnius is worried whether the Belarusian NPP will correspond to IAEA standards and about the fact what the energy produced at Astravetsk NPP will be used for. At the same time, E.Bagdonas stressed that Lithuania would not mind if it was an energy and economy issue. However, there would be a lot of questions to pose if the decision turned out to be political.

The Lithuanian Ambassador reminded that the plant would be built 23 kilometres away from the Lithuanian border and less than1 00 kilometres away from Ignalina NPP.
