Lukashenka: Belarus army will be reduced 'without revolutions'
Belarus plans to increase funding for Air Force and Air Defense after reform.
Speaking on Tuesday at a government conference on the development of Belarus' Armed Forces, Aliaksandr Lukashenka noted:
"After analysis of the recent military conflicts and wars in the world, we have determined that our focus should be on air defenses and air force. This element of our Armed Forces will enjoy priority attention," the head of state is quoted by the state news agency BELTA.
Aliaksandr Lukashenka also noted that work should be continued to optimize the stricture and reduce the quantity of Belarus' Armed Forces. "You know that we are doing it quietly, without revolutions, evolutionally. We will not make abrubt cuts," said Lukashenka.
He reminded that the Belarusian army was cut from 200,000 down to 100,000 servicemen. But even this number "is not needed." The head of state reckons cuts should be carried out "quietly so that the lives and carrers of people who currently serve in the Armed Forces are not damages."
