Lukashenka: Belarus will not extradite Bakiyev

The interim government in Bishkek sain on Tuesday that it would file criminal charges against Bakiyev for his order to shoot at people during the uprising last month. Alexander Lukashenka stressed in his interview with Reuters that Bakiyev is under protection of the Belarusian state. Minsk will reject extradition request from Bishkek for former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Alexander Lukashenka told Reuters.

On April 6-7, nearly 90 people were killed and 1500 injured during the uprising last month. Power was taken over by the interim government, while Bakiyev fled to Kazakhstan and later to Belarus.

On May 4, Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the interim government, signed a decree saying that the shooting of civilians was ordered by Bakiyev. Kyrgyzstan's Office of Prosecutor General is expected "to take relevant measure to subject Bakiyev to criminal prosecution and extradite him back to the republic".
