Lyabedzka: Authorities fear thousands of activists

Members of a committee to collect 50000 signatures for the revision of the electoral laws are to send an appeal to Minsk Mayor Mikhail Paulau.  Last Friday, city authorities allowed them to gather at the Bangalore Square, but just few hours were left to get all the approvals and get all the paperwork signed with them. A member of the initiative group and the leader of the United Civic Party, Anatol Lyabedzka, reckons that "the blockade of a civic initiative" took place.

"They would not wish to have a thousand of people walking door-to-door in the condition of the crisis or the economic and social "stability" in Belarus", Lyabedzka told the European Radio for Belarus.

The oppositionists are now trying to meet Minsk Mayor Mikhail Paulau. If nothing works out, they plan to picket city government buildings. This question today will be discussed by the Political Council of the United Democratic Forces.

Lyabedzka also says that the initiators plan to reduce the number of group members from 969 down to 100 in order to find UDF-controlled spaces for a gathering in Minsk.
